Tribute to Peter Gaffey

Dedicated to the memory of Peter Gaffey - a much loved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Joiner, Sportsman, Storyteller and proud Salfordian.

Peter was born in Salford on 2nd October 1943 and passed away peacefully at home in Little Lever, Bolton, on 9th May 2026, aged 82, as a consequence of Mesothelioma, an aggressive lung cancer caused by occupational exposure to asbestos.

During his life Peter made many friends, played many games, performed many tunes and told many stories. His passions were numerous and his enthusiasm and commitment to his work in joinery, carpentry and construction will be well known and respected by those who had the good fortune to work with and for him.

A pupil at St. Joseph’s Ordsall, Peter played with the St Joseph’s Fife and Drum Band, where his Salford Schools champion hurdler status no doubt helped him keep pace.  An ardent supporter of Manchester United and Salford Red Devils from boyhood, Peter played both football and rugby, loved both codes, and was a member of Eccles and Bolton Rugby Union clubs. He continued his sporting endeavours playing tournament squash for many years. As a man who rarely sat still, Peter also found the capacity beyond supporting his family to devote time and energy to the encouragement of young people, making a positive impression on many lives as a coach and mentor.

A much loved member of his family and community he will always be remembered.
